KIESS - WALTZ - HURR

These register-formatted notes deal with Kiess-Waltz-Hurr ancestors and are based primarily on some detailed notes written by Abraham Pierce Waltz in a booklet, "Genealogy of William Waltz, son of John George Waltz--Pioneer of 1804" which was typed in about 1940 and notes of William E. Foltz, grandson of William Waltz. William Foltz had collected, preserved and added information to the work of Abraham Waltz.

A.Pierce Waltz, grandson of William and Mary Hurr Waltz via their eldest son George, was a minister--possibly of the Baptist church--who moved to Ipswich, South Dakota and later Chadron, Nebraska, wrote the following in a foreward to his booklet:

Genealogy of William Waltz,
son of John George Waltz -- Pioneer of 1804

by Abraham Pierce Waltz

"Through the personal reading and study of the Scriptures many thousands of the inhabitants of southern Germany came into conflict with the rigid demands of Napoleon's military service [requirements] which resulted in severe persecution and imprisonment.

"To escape these intolerant persecutions and to gain freedom from imprisonment many of these sturdy people sought refuge in the new and undeveloped country where they felt that they could 'live apart' from the world and its wickedness, and worship God with joy and freedom, unmolested.

"Among these pioneers, settling in the hills bordering the Susquehanna River around Williamsport, Pennsylvania, was the family of John George Waltz, Jr. referred to as the pioneer of the Mill Creek Waltzes of 1804, and Michael Waltz referred to as the pioneer of the Mountain Waltzes of 1806.

"A Short history of these early German settlers entitled Blooming Grove was written in 1901 by Joseph H. McMinn. There is also a very interesting diary of the Ocean Voyage of the Waltz Family written by George Kiess--a member of the 1804 party and father-in-law of John George Waltz, Jr."

Introductory notes by John Arnett:

I have a copy of the diary which has been passed down in the family. The following genealogy stops with the Fifth Generation and is designed to omit any of the family who may yet be alive today. Additional information about subsequent generations is available and can be shared with other Waltz family researchers as needed. Likewise, if there are corrections or additions to be made in the following, please contact me.

Serendipitously, a couple of weeks ago [Sept 20, 1999], when I returned from visiting a relative for her 80th birthday -- having been given her copy of the Lycoming Co "Chart of Families," or Stammbaum Waldchen ("Family Tree Little Woods") as it is called on the chart, I received an e-mail from Kevin in response to a previous query I'd made months ago on a Waltz Forum. I was and am very impressed with the work and research he's done and was amazed and delighted to see the same chart of the Waltz family already translated and portrayed on his site.

Kevin's work, thus, encouraged me to scan the diary and other photos and upload them to this site I had previously started in January 1998 with A. Pierce Waltz's and William E. Foltz' material. We are very fortunate to have such good documentation of this family and are grateful for those ancestors who preserved the information.

The register below primarily deals with the descendants of George Kiess' daughter, Catherine, who m. George Waltz. The Lycoming Chart details the families of two other Children of Johann Waltz & Elizabeth Stahl, viz. Michael Waltz (one of Kevin's ancestors) and Christina Waltz. Kevin has detailed many of the descendants of Michael Waltz on his site, but other than the names on the Lycoming chart, I have no other information on the descendants of Christina Waltz and Abraham Kiess. I've scanned the portions of the chart which deal with this family's "tree" in one of the photo sections listed below.

The Register Report - Kiess, Waltz, Hurr

KIESS-WALTZ-HURR

First Generation
1. George Kiess b. 1752 m. Dorothea Gohl (1766-1847) [33]. kept diary of his trip in 1804 from near Stuttgardt north on the Rhine to Amsterdam and then to Philadelphia Children: 2. i Catherine Kiess b. 18 Jan 1779. [note: after this was uploaded, I discovered Kevin Sholder's superb web site. The Kiess genealogy is more fully detailed there, and eventually, I'll add some of his data here. Of interest to the casual genalogist, the Kiess family has a traditional descent from King Saul!]
Second Generation
2. Catherine Kiess b. 18 Jan 1779, [1] m. John George Waltz, b. 8 Aug 1776, Wurtemburg, Germany [1] (son of John Waltz and Elizabeth Stahl) d. 19 Aug 1858. Catherine died 18 Jan 1853.

Catherine immigrated to Philadelphia from Germany in 1804 accompanied by her father and husband.

John George Waltz emigrated from Wurtemburg, Germany in 1804 in the company of his wife Catherine (Kiess) and her father, George Kiess who detailed some on the journey in a diary. They arrived in Philadelphia Sept 18, 1804 after a three month sea voyage. Additional notes state that "Our people migrated from Moehringen and Eszlingen, five miles west of Stuttgardt, Wurtemburg, Germany." Buried in private cemetery on Waltz farm at Warrensville, PA. (notes of William Foltz, typed by his wife in 1925).

According to Kevin's research a group of German Brethern (called Dunkers) fled en mass from the Black Forrest area of Germany in 1804 and sailed on the ship Margaret from Amsterdam to Philadelphia. They then moved as a group to the area of Lycoming Co known as Blooming Grove. Johann George (called George) Waltz (occas spelled Walz) was the brother of Michael Waltz whose daughter Sarah Elizabeth Walz m. Georger Stabler and were Kevin Sholder's ancestors.

This is very difficult because the one side of the ship nearly touches the water, and the other side raises up like a mountain. A gust of wind threw my grandchild out of the cradle." (from Diary of George Kiess, 1804). One of Samuel's son's, Dave Waltz, is pictured in the Page 2 photo section.

Frederick Foltz had come to Lancaster Co, PA in 1854 from a small town west of Stuttgart, Wurtemburg, Germany, when he was seven yrs old and then moved with his family to Lycoming Co, PA on the west branch of the Susquehananh River in 1857 and settled at Cogan Station, PA where he grew up. Sometime after their son William was born in April 1878, Frederick and Caroline (Waltz) Foltz moved westward settling in Nebraska where he was a farmer. A few years after the establishment of Oklahoma Territory in 1880, Fredrick and his five children moved to the capital town of Guthrie, Oklahoma in 1883, some six years before the "Boomer" rush of April 22, 1889 and ten years before the famed "Cherokee Run" of Sept 16, 1893. After Caroline's death, Frederick continued to live in Guthrie where daughter Flora lived and son Charley worked in the Post Office. In later years Frederick split his time visiting with son, Harry in Butler, OK and son, William and family in Muskogee.

William E. Foltz moved from his birthplace of Williamsport, PA when less than five to Nebraska where his father likely farmed. With the opening of Oklahoma Territory, the family moved to Guthrie when William was five. By the time he was 27 he was living in Tulsa, and, then, in 1905 (probably after his mother's death that year) moved to Muskogee where he worked in a store owned by Fred Turner. He decided he wanted to become a lawyer and, through self study, was able to pass the bar in 1910 (the same year the official capital of Oklahoma was moved from Guthrie to Oklahoma City.) Oklahoma, which entered the Union as the 46th state in 1907, apparently appealed to him, and he took a job with the U.S. Indian Service for which he continued to work for the next 36 years, out of a base in Muskogee, serving for the most part as probate attorney of the "Five Civilized Tribes." He retired in April 1947. About the time he married Mabel in 1918 he bought a farm near Ft. Gibson where he established a grove of paper-shell pecans and raised other crops. William and Mabel were members of the First Baptist Church of Muskogee and also attended the Ft. Gibson Baptist Church. They had one daughter, Margaret Caroline Foltz.

Mabel McNees Foltz taught school and served as a principal of Wheelock Academy Indian School where she met W.E.Foltz one day when he happened to stop by for a visit as part of his work with the Indians. She was very interested in genealogy and did much to collect and preserve the family records. She typed some detailed notes on the Foltz and Waltz families in about 1925, and corresponded with Miss Van Deventer regarding the Mathes & McNees families. She was an active correspondent until a year before her death in 1950.
