Generation No. 1

1. DAVID1 ARNETT died May 27, 1737 in Louisa Co, VA1. He married MARTHA.

Notes for DAVID ARNETT:
Rob Arnett found the following:
David Arnett bn 1680 in King Wm Co [later Louisa] who was married to a Martha Bibb. [This information may have come from the IGI].

Others including Steve Thrasher like the theory that David Arnett was the David Arnott, one of 112 prisoners [Highland rebels] who landed in Va -- on the York River -- in 1716 aboard the Ship Elizabeth & Anne of Liverpool, Edward Trafford, master. Notice of these are listed in the Calendar of State Papers [VA96] and The Quarterly of The Virginia Genealogical Society, Vol 20, No. 1, 1982. [VA95] None of the other 111 names are common in the Louisa genealogies, but there are several Fergusons and these names later show up on petition lists to form Tazewell Co in 1796 [VA94]

Among the first vestry of Fredericksville Parish in 1742 were John Poindexter and Abraham Venable - Louisa Co Historical Magazine, June 1969, Vol 1, No 1. Both Venable and Arnett names show up in the 17th century records of Barbados.

Much of the subsequent genealogy of this Louisa Co family of David Arnett was organized by Mrs. Ann P. Couey of Winchester, KY and later edited into a thirty page manuscript by Jo Ann Williamson of Alexandria, VA in 1990.

ii.	WILLIAM ARNETT, b. September 01, 1785, Louisa Co, VA.

Notes for WILLIAM ARNETT:
Robert Arnett and others are trying determine if this William Arnett is the same William who married Rosa Porter and moved to Smith Co, TN about 1820. There were some close connections with the Porter family among the Louisa group:
This William Arnett was the first cousin of Elizabeth Arnett (dau of James who m. Margaret Linney) who married Joseph Porter in 1815. Joseph Porter and William L. Arnett served as executors of James Arnett's [m. Margaret Linney] estate in 1853 No word yet on who Joseph's parents were. Rosa's parents are suggested by some to have been a Thomas Porter, and it may turn out that Rosa and Joseph were sibs or first cousins. Thus far there's no other evidence for another lineage for this William. Other members of his second family migrated to Tennessee and he could have followed stopping at Smith Co.

In the 1850 Smith Co, Tennessee census the family of a William Arnett are listed:
William 63 (b.1787, VA); Rosa 46 (b.1804, VA)
children: William P. [Porter] 29 (b.1821); Susan 17 (b.1833); Artemsia 15 (b.1835);
James 18 (b.1832); Richard 13 (b.1837).
Other than Artemsia, the names are consistent with the Louisa Co Arnett group.
For the moment these are listed as a separate family grouping.

He married ELIZABETH ANN SHORT October 17, 1822 in Barren Co, KY17, daughter of FLEMING SHORT. She was born August 14, 180418, and died January 12, 1875.

Notes for JAMES SHACKELFORD ARNETT:
In some notations the "S" is said to stand for "Samuel" but most list the name as "Shackelford"

"On the north side of the [ Beaver] creek [near Slick Rock] and opposite the BRYAN lands, and on the Columbia road stands an old mansion, once the home of James Arnett. He raised a family of two boys and two girls, all that I ever knew. I think he had a son Samuel, who married and lived in the neighborhood of Horse Cave many years ago. One son William, owned a farm and an apiary near the old homestead. He never married. He spent the most of his time in latter years with his bees. He has been dead several years. The daughters were Eliza and Elizabeth. Eliza married a man by the name of Williams of Cumberland County. He was a Federal Soldier of the Civil War and did not live many years after his marriage. One son was born to them, who is now living. His mother is dead. She drew a pension from the Federal government during the most, if not all, of her widowhood. Miss Lizzy never married. She carried on business at Slick Rock. She was an intelligent business woman, also an authoress. She wrote one book entitled 'Mongst the Hills of Kentucy.'
"Earl Williams, the son of Eliza and his family, are the only known descendants of the Arnett family in Barren County. The others, William, Eliza and Lizzy are dead.
"Farther down the creek from the Arnett lands, Solomon Quesenberry owned a large body of land on the north side of the creek. Below him James Arnett built a mill for sawing lumber and grinding corn, in an early day. The mill has been kept in operation most of the time since it was first built. It has changed hands several times, and owned at this writing by Isaac Mayfield." pg 13. "History of Citizens of Beaver Creek at an Early Date" appearing in The Backroads of Barren County, Kentucky, a compilation of newspaper articles penned by "Ellot" William D. Tolle and appearing in the Glasgow, Kentucky newspapers for a period of over 50 years., 1991. [found by jwa in LDS Library at SLC and now in the L. Arnett file]

from The Glasgow Times, Dec 3, 1942 - Sep 2, 1943:
"James Shackelford Arnett...born near Beaver Creek west of Glasgow...He grew up in the neighborhood of Short's Mill and was united in marriage to Eliza Ann Short, daughter of the miller...Sometime later he bought what in later years was known as the Mayfield Mill about ten miles up stream, a few miles east of Lecta, KY.
"Just prior to the Civil War, the widow, Mrs. Eliza Ann Arnett, purchased what is known as the Arnett Place located on the Edmonton and Glasgow highway about six miles east of Glasgow from John D. Overstreet, where Mr. Dewey Billingsley now lives (1943) where she resided until her death in 1875. This farm originally consisted of some 320 acres of fine timbered land, of which William B. Arnett - a son - purchased 100 acres."

Notes for ELIZABETH ANN SHORT:
from the Glasgow Times, 1943:

"The earliest record of the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church is recorded in deed book K, page 42, Barren County Clerk's office, under date of January 27th, 1825, when John Warder, for the consideration of $1.00, deeds one and one-half acres of land to the Mt. Pisgah Church. Then at a later date, in deed book 8, page 40, Eliza Ann Arnett [wife of James Shackleford] for $1.00 sold a certain tract of land 'lying on the waters of Beaver Creek, near the old church known and called Mt. Pisgah. I am reliably informed that the present church stands on the latter purchase, which adjoined the original church site.
"The following were members of the church some sixty or seventy years ago: Hiram Worthington, Sarah C. Worthington, Richard Taylor, Nancy Taylor, Lizzie Arnett, Eliza Ann Arnett, John Morton, John Stephens, Albert, Henry and James Bryan."

He was known as 'The Bee Man' having made a meticulous study of Bee Culture his hive covered a large area around his residence. Sightseers often stopped to chat with him and he was in his glory when explaining the habits of his bee colony."

Notes for ELENOR ELIZABETH "LIZZIE" ARNETT:

"A daughter of James Shackleford and Eliza Ann Arnett, Miss Lizzie, studied Music and art, and at one time was connected with Miss Perring's Art Studio on Walnut Street, in Louisville, KY. She taught music and art at the old Normal School, which now is a part of the Jacksonway Hotel in Glasgow.
"A sulphur well at Slick Rock attracted a considerable number of summer visitors during the 1880's. The healing properties became of such renown that it was necessary to open a boarding house to accommodate persons living at a distance who wished to stay for a number of days and drink the water. Miss Lizzie Arnett was the hostess at the boarding house some fifty or sixty years ago.
"Lizzie and her sister were members of the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church.
built on land donated by Lizzie's sister.
"Lizzie was also the author of a number of books: probably her most outstanding works was "Mongst the Hills of Kentucky" which received considerable recognition among readers of fiction.
"Miss Lizzie and her sister, Mrs. Annie E. Williams, spent their declining years in the solitude of the old Arnett home on the Edmonton highway, and are buried in the Arnett graveyard some three hundred feet west of the old home-site."

Notes for JOHN (?) ARNETT:
This John Arnett father of Rebecca Comer accord to Tim may be different from the John Arnett son of James A. Arnett and Margaret Linney. judging by dates, unless John was the son of James Arnett and Sally Burrus. There is also a Lincoln County record of a marriage in 1798 between a James Arnett and Catey Lamb with John Arnett as a surety. It's not clear whether this James and John were from the Louisa Co family group or not. Even the dates on this John Arnett are somewhat suspect. Obviously, more information needed.

After the war he resumed the duties pertaining to his farm, which he conducted successfully until his death. He was a brave soldier, a good friend and an honest citizen who possessed a supreme contempt for people of small calibre, and for that reason many people classed him as among the eccentric type of citizenship." Notes for ANN ELIZA ARNETT:
In his notes on the Beaver Creek area of Barren Co, William Tole refers to two daughters of James Arnett, Eliza and Elizabeth or Lizzy. He mentions that Eliza married but Elizabeth didn't. In Larry Arnett's genealogy Anna is the daughter who married Williams, and thus Eliza and Anna are likely the same person. In the 1850 Barren Co. census Ann E. Arnett is listed as being 4 yo.

" Eliza married a man by the name of Williams of Cumberland County. He was a Federal Soldier of the Civil War and did not live many years after his marriage. One son was born to them, who is now living. His mother is dead. She drew a pension from the Federal government during the most, if not all, of her widowhood. " Glasgow Times articles by William Tolle

From The Glasgow Times, 1943:
"Miss Lizzie and her sister, Mrs. Annie E. Williams, spent their declining years in the solitude of the old Arnett home on the Edmonton highway, and are buried in the Arnett graveyard some three hundred feet west of the old home-site."

"I am indebted to Mr. Earl A. Williams - son of Mrs. Annie E. (Arnett) Williams - of Aberdeen, Miss. -- for the information relating to the Arnett family. His boy-hood was spent on the old Arnett farm. He entered the Old University of Lexington, Kentucky when eighteen years of age, for which he graduated in 1891. He located at Louisville, Kentucky and was connected with the Louisville National Banking Company for many years, on of the strongest institutions of that kind at that time. He has held many lucrative positions as accountant for Railroads, Building & Loan Associations, etc. since severing his connection with the Louisville Banking concern. He is now, at the age of 75, keeping books for two large firms in Aberdeen, Miss. His slogan has always been (and is yet) that a man is never old until he thinks he is."

Notes for WILLIAM MARION ARNETT:
letter from Mrs. Alfred K. (Jayne) Berman of Indianapolis, IN
to Ky Historical Society
May 21, 1956:

"Sirs,
It has been suggested to me by a librarian at our state library that you possibly have books listing names of Confederate soldiers and Union soldiers from the state of Kentucky.
I know that my grandfather, William Marion Arnett, from Carlisle, Nicholas County, Kentucky, served on the side of the Union, and I know that company and regiment in which he served. I am interested, however, in obtaining similar information regarding his brother, David, born 1834; Jeptha, born 1848, as well as his father, William Arnett, born 1813, married to the former Matilda Eubank, all of Carlisly. I do know that this was a divided family -- hence the necessity of searching both sides.
Also, perchance, do you have any data on Samuel Arnett, the son of James Arnett of Louisa County, Virginia, married to the former Nancy Ammons, who was the father of William Arnett born in 1813, who operated the old 'Indian Queen Hotel' on the old Maysville Road in Nicholas County? He [Samuel], of course, was my great great grandfather.
I am interested in acquiring any knowledge I can pertaining to the family for a book I am writing, and I will be everlastingly grateful for any aid you may give me.
	Very truly yours,
	Jayne Berman
	(Mrs. Alfred K. Berman)"
