[1921 - 1925]

(47) Next [1921-1925] comes my wife prostration and affliction at the age of 65 years, 11 months and 13 days when on April 1st, 1921 she was stricken with a severe stroke of paralysis which caused her death on Feb. 23, 1925, laying, confined, in a helpless condition devoid of her mentality, 3 years, 10 months, and 22 days, or 1424 days.

[She stayed at her home during this entire time and, according to her grandson, W. W. Arnett, and, as noted above was in pain much of the time. Her bedroom was the downstairs left front room, and H. G. slept in the same room with her, according to Carolyn Minix.]

(47) Her children sometime afterwards came and held a conference regarding a suitable nurse to wait on Rebecca Arnett during her sickness and at the suggestion of Calloway Howard, Eugene, Erin, and Loulie agreed to furnish or contribute $2.00 per week and the amounts paid by each have been duly credited as shown on the following pages from the accounts kept by myself ==Eugene, Erin, Loulie, and D.M. Arnett dec'd heirs, all being legatees of a will made by G.C.A. (48) Nov. 24, 1909. Recorded in Will Book No. 1, Pages 195-196 Mag.Co.Rec which fully explains itself. So the accounts are kept and prorated according to the several interest claimed by the said legatees.

"Every Sweet has its sour:
Every evil its good." . . . . says Emerson

[H.G. kept many accounts. In the actual journal and the hard copy annotation, these are set out more neatly than in the rendition below. I've not taken the time to set out all the accounts in table form. -- jwa]

[1921]

[The Salyersville Independent published its first issue May 6, 1921. Previous papers had included the Kentucky Mountaineer and others. From time to time the Journal of the Magoffin County Historical Society has published exerpts from the papers. H. G. Arnett was an avid reader of these as well as the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Cincinnati Enquirer and others.

"Jun 17, 1921. . . OIL NEWS: Magoffin County is now delivering about 40,000 barrels per month. The first gas well was drilled on the Mine Fork uplift, Johnson and Magoffin County line, Nov. 11, 1918 on advice of Hy B. Browning, Geologist. Development went slowly with a drilling machine in the field until ten gas wells had been drilled by the Bed Rock Oil Company and some four or five by other parties on the edge of the structure. On Sept. 4, 1919 the first real oil well drilled in Magoffin was drilled near the post office of Wheelersburg on Litteral's Fork on the Milt Wheeler lease. Since that time, not withstanding winter of almost continuous downpour of rain and slump in price of oil, development has gone on rapidly until today. Magoffin County hasa 181 oil wells ranging from daily production of 10 to 100 barrels."

[1923]

["There were many killings and shoot-outs when I grew up as a boy. I remember about 1923 my grandfather, H.G. Arnett, lived at the old home place at Hendricks, which we called Middle Fork, (This house was recently designated a Kentucky Landmark) about four miles west of Salyersville. One day Grandpa was standing in the doorway of his home observing two men who were trying to kill each other with pistols. One of the bullets went astray and hit my Grandpa in the left shoulder. Word was flashed to Salyersville that Grandpa had been shot. Daddy [E.B. Arnett] saddled up his horse and took Dr. Walter Conley with him, and they rode over to the Middle Fork. Dr. Connelley extracted the bullet and Grandpa recovered." --W.W. A. interview: HG11]

"Oct 3, 1924. . .HENDRICKS: Making sorghum and hauling coal and stovewood are the popular amusements here now. The air feels a little melancholy after so much rain and we can look out for Jack Frost. . . Mr. Galen Howard, the cross tie king of Hendricks, has now over 6,000 ties cut and hauled to the main creek, with over 4,000 more to saw. Corn crops are very green and we fear an early frost. The rabid dog scare has about subsided after the killing of several suspicious ones. Mrs. Hettgren King and husband, Thomas L. King of Cleveland, OH, are visiting Mrs. King's grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. H. G. Arnett, and other friends and relatives after being away for over three years."

[1926]

[J. Oakley Arnett married his first wife, Fay Caudill, daughter of Willie Caudill, the son of Brother Lewis Caudill, a Baptist preacher. For some reason the marriage didn't last more than a few years. Oaks later married Gracie Hickman in Feb 1938.]

[In this year, H.G. wrote the first page of his Journal and continued the project for the next six years until about 1932.]

[1927]

[H.G.A.'s older brother, Logan Arnett (b. 1845), died April 30, 1927 at the age of 81yrs and 10 mos. The Arnett Album, Vol. 1, contains a photo of H. G., Logan, and Galen --three surviving brothers -- taken a few years before Logan died. See Appendix B.]
